What are dentures?

Dentures are removable oral prosthetics designed to replace some or all of your missing teeth. They’re supported by your gum tissue and jawbones and provide an aesthetically pleasing, cost-effective way to restore your smile. If you’re missing the majority of your permanent teeth and you don’t like the idea of undergoing complex oral surgery, dentures are worth looking into.

Are there different types of dentures?

The team at New York Dental Health offers three types of dentures:

Temporary dentures

Your dentist might recommend temporary dentures if you’re undergoing a complex cosmetic dentistry procedure. Temporary dentures only last for a few months and are held in place with a metal framework. They can preserve your smile if you’re waiting to receive crowns, bridges, or dental implants.

Partial dentures

If you’re only missing some of your permanent teeth, your dentist might recommend partial dentures. Partial dentures feature a metal framework. This design allows them to fit snugly over your remaining teeth.

Complete dentures

Complete dentures work to replace all of the teeth on your upper arch, lower arch, or both arches. They feature a pink plastic base that fits snugly over your gums. Thanks to modern manufacturing techniques, complete dentures are more attractive and comfortable than ever.

How are dentures made?

To make your dentures, your New York Dental Health provider performs an oral exam and asks you about your goals for treatment. If your dentist determines you’re a good candidate for dentures, they take molds of your teeth and gums. After taking these molds, your dentist sends them to a laboratory that manufactures your dentures. The laboratory uses your impressions to design a set of dentures that looks and fits perfectly.

What are the benefits of dentures?

Dentures provide a wide range of benefits. For starters, unlike other restorative dentistry procedures, no surgery, needles, or invasive treatments are involved. Dentures are also more affordable than treatments like dental implants and bridges. This can relieve some stress if you’re on a tight budget.

Don’t let missing teeth negatively impact your quality of life or self-esteem. To learn more about the benefits of dentures, make an appointment at New York Dental Health by calling the office or using the online booking tool today.
