Who is a candidate for teeth whitening?

People who have yellowed or discolored teeth may be a candidate for teeth whitening. If you have discoloration due to medications or injury, you may need an intervention, such as veneers, to whiten your teeth. But, Philips Zoom!® whitening and at-home kits may help teeth that have changed color due to:

Aging

As you get older, the enamel on the outside of your teeth thins, revealing the darker dentin within.

Food choices

Certain foods and beverages, such as coffee, tea, and red wine, cause staining.

Tobacco use

Smoking and chewing tobacco can cause yellowing of the teeth.

Make an appointment to find out if your condition will benefit from the Zoom! chairside method or an at-home kit.

What is the Zoom! whitening system?

Zoom! is a whitening process used by the team at New York Dental Health. The session takes just one hour to make your teeth dramatically whiter.

During a session, your provider covers your lips and gums leaving only the teeth exposed. Your provider then applies the hydrogen peroxide-based whitening compound and cures it with a specialized overhead light.

The Zoom! gel and light work in sync to penetrate your teeth and break up the stains that cause discoloration.

Why should I consider in-office whitening?

In-office whitening is faster and more effective than over-the-counter products like toothpaste or strips. The Zoom! system also involves no mess or fuss – you’re in and out of the office in 60 minutes.

The in-office procedure also means you have access to professionals who can adjust the whitening process if you should experience sensitivity in your gums and other soft tissue. Gums can sometimes react to whitening compounds.

What is at-home whitening?

At-home whitening involves trays that you wear at your leisure for a designated period of time. You usually need to wear the trays daily for a week or longer as the peroxide-based solution is less concentrated than that used during the in-office sessions.

You might choose at-home whitening if you want a more gradual whitening effect. Some people also prefer to have control over the procedure.

If you’re ready for a brighter, whiter smile, call New York Dental Health or request an appointment online today.
